Proposal: To add hot water recovery to both ice machines and the
outdoor freezer units located outside the kitchen for the purpose of increasing
hot water capacity for washing dishes, reducing downtime of the dishwasher
and reducing energy costs.
A hot water recovery unit added to your ice machines and freezers
will increase hot water capacity and reduce energy costs by recapturing
heat that is normally discarded, reducing load on the compressor
and providing free hot water thereby reducing hot water costs from your
electric and gas bills..
If connected to a heat-pump, such as the two York units located
near the outdoor freezer. Whenever the unit is running hot water is being
made at a reduced rate not just in the summer.
Costs: The recovery unit sells for $200 (price negotiable) and a second
water heater tank (recommended 80 gallons or larger, see below) approximately
$350 for 80 gallons. labor will be on a time and material basis verses
quoting a price, since a quoted price will have to be inflated to cover
any possible expenses.
Piping from the recovery units to the storage tank will be 3/4
inch preferably double insulated when run outdoors. Refrigerant piping
will be minimum cost and recovery units will be located on a wall near
the unit or on the unit. The units will require electrical connections
to the ice machines and freezers where the recovery pump will operate with
the condenser fan motors. Water piping will require service valves and
check valves to facilitate isolating system for service.
Water piping will be hung with threaded rod and beam clamps and
connections to tanks will be made with union connections and ball valves
to facilitate servicing. Additional recovery units can be paralleled for
increased performance.
Storage tanks should be located in a storage room or location
where space is not a problem. Storage tanks cannot be suspended from the
ceiling or hung on a wall due to the great weight.
Recovery units can be connected to any refrigeration device.
Such as heatpumps, freezers, refrigerators and ice machines. Maximum performance
will be attained with recovery units connected to the walk-in freezers,
ice machines, and the heatpumps near the kitchen.
Other benefits: The compressors will draw less electricity, work
better and last longer. The waste heat will help offset hot
water costs especially for washing dishes since increases in refrigeration
and ice making usually proceed cleaning demands.
While by themselves these units will not drastically reduce present
energy costs. When compared to the energy costs of additional gas and or
electric water heating and the fact that the first 120 gallons (the capacity
of the present gas water heater filled with recovered heat plus the capacity
of the recovery tank minus 60 left over to keep the gas burner from firing)
will be free. The savings are significant. Also less downtime of the dishwasher
means more productivity and more available hot water for uses other than
washing dishes, such as cleaning.
